Cinemapolis will get a jump on April Fool’s Day this year with a pre-holiday film fest. The 2nd Annual Fool’s Day Flicks Marathon is a day-long event featuring films of and about some of our favorite comedians. The program kicks off on Saturday, March 31st at 2pm with screenings of three new films: Wait for Your Laugh, I Need You To Kill, and Gilbert. After the film screenings, Groundhog Comedy will also be hosting a LIVE stand-up comedy show at Wine & Design on Cayuga Street. The Fool’s Day Flicks Marathon at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor C.S.P. Management.
The marathon is the brainchild of Cinemapolis board member, Howard Leib. In addition to being an entertainment lawyer and the host of the “No Soap, Radio” Hour on WRFI, Leib is also a recovering stand-up comic himself. “I am thrilled that Cinemapolis is saluting April Fool’s Day with this tribute to stand-up comedy,” says Leib. “Stand-up is the most dangerous form of performing there is, because there is no such thing as polite laughter. It is also the most cathartic of the performing arts, and I’m looking forward to theaters filled with laughing, happy, well-adjusted people.”
This year’s line-up of films features all new documentaries focusing on comics both young and seasoned. The late, great Rose Marie gets her close up in Wait for Your Laugh, Jason Wise’s fantastic chronicle of a career that spanned vaudeville, radio, film, and television. J. Elvis Weinstein (of MST3K fame) goes on a globe-trotting comedy roadtrip with I Need You to Kill, a travelogue detailing the cultural bridges—and clashes—formed when three young American comics take off on a tour through three of the world’s newest stand-up comedy scenes: Hong Kong, Singapore, and Macau. And finally, Gilbert is director Neil Berkeley’s funny and unexpectedly poignant portrait of the life and career of the iconic and, at times, infamous Gilbert Gottfried.
Each of the films will be accompanied by conversations with experts, filmmakers, and even one of the comics himself! Pop-culture historian Wally Podrazik, who interviewed Rose Marie shortly before her death last December, will skype in live after the screening of Wait for Your Laugh. Leib’s pre-recorded interview with Gilbert Gottfried will follow the screening of Gilbert.
The pre-Fool’s Day celebration wraps up with a live show of stand-up at Wine & Design, presented by Groundhog Comedy. Considering the location is just a half-block away from the cinema, it’s a fitting final lap to the comedy movie marathon. Groundhog Comedy’s Ruben RC will emcee the live event and is helping curate interstitial comedy clips for the screenings at the cinema.
Regular ticket prices will apply to individual screenings, but comedy fans looking to go the distance can get a Marathoner tag for $25. Those wearing their tag will gain entry to all three screenings and the live stand-up show. Tags are available in person only at the Cinemapolis box office.
