PRESS PLAY is back for its second season! This collaboration between the Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis puts a currently running play in conversation with a film that explores similar themes. The 4-part series will include screenings of select films paired with the Kitchen’s productions of GIRLFRIEND (September 9-30; screening: Tuesday, September 25), 2.5 MINUTE RIDE (November 25 – December 9; screening Tuesday, December 4), THE ROYALE (March 10-32; screening: Tuesday, March 19), and TRIBES (June 2-23; screening Tuesday, June 11). Following each screening, audiences are invited to stay for a conversation led by Kitchen Theatre artists.

The 2nd season gets underway on Tuesday, September 25th  with the pairing of GIRLFRIEND with Julie Tamor’s award-winning 2007 film, Across The Universe. Both the film and the play incorporate some classic tunes to deal with universal truths of love, struggle, and triumph.

M. Bevin O’Gara, Producing Artistic Director of the Kitchen Theatre, will be leading the post-screening conversation on Tuesday, September 25. The film screening begins at 7 pm.

Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and animation, the film is paired with many songs by The Beatles that defined the time.

ABOUT GIRLFRIEND (Book by Todd Almond, Music & Lyrics by Matthew Sweet)

Summer, 1993; small town Nebraska. College-bound, football playing Mike has everything figured out. At least until he meets Will, a quiet boy from his graduating class. This indie-pop musical based on the album “Girlfriend” by Matthew Sweet captures the thrill of first love–and how we discover each other and ourselves through the mixtapes we make.
