LADY BIRD

SUMMARY

The adventures of a young woman living in Northern California for a year.
Director: Greta Gerwig
Writer: Greta Gerwig
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Odeya Rush, Kathryn Newton

REVIEW

For her first time in the director’s chair, Greta Gerwig goes the autobiographical route with this entirely captivating and remarkably honest look at one girl’s last year in a Sacramento, Calif., high school, circa 2002. Saoirse Ronan plays Christine (a.k.a. Lady Bird, a.k.a. Gerwig herself) with remarkable depth and empathy, at one moment shy and the other unworldly rebellious. Gerwig lets her story breathe naturally, skipping almost vignette-like across the course of two semesters, all the while skillfully flicking at the problems of Christine’s parents (Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts, both delivering career-best performances) and the general economic malaise surrounding the family. There are no fireworks or twists or unnecessary frills here, nor should there be – this is simply perfect filmmaking from a voice that demands to be heard.
